Gilberte Marimootoo Natchoo

Artist

Self-taught Mauritian artist Gilberte Marimootoo Natchoo, didn’t begin her artistic career until 1997. But within just a few years her work could be found in galleries throughout the country, from her first showing at Rose Hill’s Max Boullé Gallery in 1999 to collective and solo exhibitions at dozens of venues and galleries across the island, including the National Art Gallery of Mauritius. Natchoo’s artworks are heavily inspired by organic shapes and the natural world: some of her favourite subjects include marine life, women’s bodies and landscapes, and her paintings – both figurative and abstract – are a colourful expression of the subtlety she finds in these themes.
